Window Blinds: Cleaning Tips

Cleaning is considered amongst the dreaded chores in, tiresome and preferred by none. Cleaning window blinds never gets a green from anyone, such an exasperating job, everyone wants their blinds to be dust free and clean but to get it cleaned blade by blade is something which requires great effort. If dusted on a weekly basis, the window blinds can be kept tidy and never becomes a big pain.

To clean the blinds with less effort, one can follow these useful tips. Before the task begins, grab the equipments to clean: rubber gloves, vacuum cleaner, feather duster, drop clot, mild detergent, dryer sheets, antibacterial wipes and soft cloth.

With your rubber gloves on, remove the blinds and hang it upside down, and use the feather duster for soft dusting to take out the lighter dust particles. Turn around the blinds to clean the dust from the other side. A soft cloth can also be used if a feather duster is not available in your equipment list. A wet towel or antibacterial wipes can be used can be used to remove the dust that sticks even after the blinds are dusted with feather duster. Hold the blinds with the towel in between your thumb and fingers. Now gently move your hand from one side to another. The dust sticking on the blinds can be found on the damp cloth.

Metal blinds are ductile; applying too much pressure can bend them and damage it permanently. For blinds of those kinds, carefully remove it from the window and spread it over the ground. Now spray water it using a hose, this is effective to clear off the dusts. This method should be deployed only on metal blinds and not on wooden or fabric blinds. Wooden blinds do add an extra charm to the living spaces, to remove the dust, dusting spray and cloth really helps. Wipe the blinds using a soft cloth after the cleaning liquid is sprayed; deploy the same technique on the other side of the blind.

One should take extra care not to use any wet or damp cloth to clean the fabric blinds. Use the vacuum cleaner on both sides to remove the dusts settled. For the tough stains on the fabric blinds a wash with warm water using a mild detergent can prove effective to remove any stains. Rubbing dryer sheets can help in reducing the amount of dust accumulating on the fabric. Dusting the blinds on a regular weekly basis will keep your window blinds clean and dust free for quite some time. Try to carry out the errands at least on a half yearly basis to keep the blinds dust free and your window space becomes clean and your heart light.

  7. You should always remember that when washing wood blinds, you shouldn't over saturate the wood. You should wipe the excess water off immediately to avoid discolouring. Also, it is good to vacuum blinds often with a brush attachment, but you should do it across the slats and not up and down.
